The lemurs of Nosy Komba

Next activity

No classification in the animal kingdom includes lemurs, or prosimians, to be go by their exact familial name.

Lemurs developed parallel to monkey and man, the third family in the order of primates. Lemurs live in the trees of the rainforest. Their large bulbous eyes betray their nocturnal activity. The Ring tailed Lemur is the only exception to this as they are active during the day and they spend much of their time on the forest floor.

Madagascar is home to 90% of the lemurs. The ring tailed lemur is still relatively free range in different parts of South and South West of Madagascar, but it is becoming normal to move them to protected areas. Hunting and destruction of the natural environment of the animals are a direct threat to their survival

Lemur Catta and Varis are housed in Nosy Komba.
