Deciphering the behavior of takins to better protect them
Takins are understudied and endangered mammals that inhabit remote areas of the Himalayas. Due to disruptions in their natural habitat, breeding takins in zoos plays a crucial role in species conservation.
Pairi Daiza is participating in a study on the social behavior of takins. Six times a month, our keepers films our group of takins for approximately ten minutes without disturbing them. The analysis of behaviors, as well as data such as weather, season, and enclosure design, will help enhance the overall understanding of the natural behavior of takins, a species still little known due to its remote and inaccessible habitat.
